A beloved father known for his exceptional parenting and strong character tragically passed away while vacationing in Spain. Jeremy Paynter, a former UK powerlifting champion from Seabrook near Hythe, was in Alcudia, Mallorca on June 28.

During an initial hearing at Oakwood House in Maidstone, it was revealed that the 45-year-old was on a jet ski with his partner, Emily Hill, when the watercraft capsized while stationary. Coroner Patricia Harding stated that despite both wearing life jackets, the jet ski tipped, causing them to fall into the water. Paynter managed to help his partner back onto the jet ski but struggled to climb back on himself.

Following the incident, Paynter, a senior finance manager originally from New Zealand, was pulled onto rocks after an air ambulance was called to the scene. Despite efforts by emergency services, he could not be revived. A preliminary post-mortem examination in Spain determined asphyxia as the cause of death.

Paynter leaves behind a seven-year-old daughter and is fondly remembered by his loved ones as a caring and generous father whose warmth touched many lives. His ex-wife, Cathrine Spencer, a former England rugby player, expressed her sentiments in a heartfelt LinkedIn post, praising his impact on those he encountered.

Colleagues and friends continue to share tributes, with many highlighting Paynter’s positive influence and leadership qualities. Kenneth Louis Juan, a former colleague, commended Paynter for his encouragement and unwavering support, describing him as both a mentor and a friend. The inquest has been adjourned for a future hearing to delve deeper into the circumstances of Paynter’s untimely passing.
