“UK Prepares for Record £3.8B Spending Spree During World Cup”

Published on

Football enthusiasts are gearing up to spend a record-breaking £3.8 billion during the upcoming World Cup event, with pubs alone expected to serve over 58 million pints. The announcement of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the tournament has ignited hopes among loyal fans, despite some notable exclusions. Scotland has also finalized its lineup.

As the football extravaganza set to take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada commences in less than three weeks, businesses in the UK are anticipating a significant sales surge. Projections from Website VoucherCodes.co.uk indicate that the nation could witness spending of £3.8 billion during the 37-day tournament, contingent on the progress of England and Scotland. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to support England’s captain, Harry Kane, and the team, considering the potential economic impact and tax revenue boost.

This year’s anticipated expenditure surpasses the £2.75 billion spent during the 2024 Men’s Euros event and the £2 billion economic upturn observed during the 2022 World Cup, which was affected by a winter schedule. Only the 2020 Euros tournament came close with a spending figure of £3.52 billion, fueled by heightened football enthusiasm during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite an expected decrease in viewership due to late match start times, VoucherCodes.co.uk estimates that approximately 34.9 million fans in the UK will tune in to watch the tournament from homes, pubs, and eateries over the five-week competition, slightly fewer than the 35.2 million viewers for the previous men’s Euros event.

Retail outlets, particularly supermarkets, are anticipated to capture the largest share of the World Cup spending spree, with estimated sales of £2.9 billion. Additionally, pubs under pressure are expected to benefit, with a projected £900 million surge in revenue as 12.4 million viewers are expected to watch games in pubs, bars, and similar establishments. Pubs are predicted to be the favored viewing location, with 82% of respondents planning to watch at least one match in a pub setting.

During the tournament, fans are projected to consume 58.5 million pints of beer, equivalent to 11 Olympic-size swimming pools, with an additional 3.5 million pints likely to be raised in goal celebrations. The British Beer and Pub Association estimates that the World Cup could generate £275 million for pubs, with each pub selling an extra 1,240 pints on average.

Emma McClarkin, BBPA’s chief, highlighted the positive impact of the World Cup on British pubs and breweries, emphasizing the unique communal experience of watching matches together. The report suggests that supermarkets are set to lead in sales with an estimated worth of £1.95 billion, likely due to the match timings.

In addition to groceries, the report forecasts significant spending on new TVs, electrical goods, team apparel, merchandise, and garden equipment. The late match timings also raise the possibility of increased absences, as more than a quarter of fans surveyed admitted they might consider taking a day off.

Overall, the upcoming World Cup is anticipated to not only bring excitement to football fans but also significantly boost sales across various sectors in the UK.
