The United Kingdom has become involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed that an RAF fighter jet intercepted an Iranian drone that was flying towards Qatar.

This marks the first instance of a British aircraft taking down a missile or drone since the increase in hostilities. UK military jets have been conducting defensive operations in the region since Saturday, following strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which led to retaliatory actions by Tehran across the Middle East.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence verified the incident, stating, “On 1 March 2026, a Royal Air Force Typhoon, part of the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon Squadron based in Qatar, successfully engaged an Iranian drone approaching Qatari airspace.”

“The Typhoon jet was on a defensive air patrol and utilized an air-to-air missile to neutralize the drone, safeguarding Qatar’s airspace and British interests in the area. Our Armed Forces are actively involved in protecting our people, interests, and allies.”

The drone interception marks the first operational defense action by the joint squadron in support of Qatar.

Armed Forces Minister Al Carns commended the RAF for their successful interception, expressing his appreciation for their professionalism and urging them to maintain their efforts.

Prior to this, a British counter-drone unit in Iraq had destroyed an Iranian drone heading towards a coalition base housing UK personnel. Additionally, RAF Typhoons and F-35s have been conducting defensive missions from a British base in Cyprus.

Although two Iranian missiles were launched towards the British bases in Cyprus, the government does not believe they were deliberately targeted at the UK personnel stationed there.

The government has initiated an extensive operation to assist hundreds of thousands of British citizens in the Gulf region amidst ongoing Iranian threats.
