A significant change in the way phone calls are made is on the horizon for UK residents, prompting homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long served as the backbone of communication are being phased out in favor of new technology known as Digital Voice, which leverages broadband for connecting with loved ones.
This transition not only aligns with modern demands but also enhances reliability, introducing new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to smartphones, and enhanced screening capabilities to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
Scheduled for implementation in January 2027, the comprehensive upgrade is prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding, urging households to assess their landline setups and ensure readiness for the digital era.
This initiative coincides with recent research indicating that individuals often procrastinate essential actions, assuming that as long as something is functional, immediate action is unnecessary.
Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to service provider communications to ensure uninterrupted landline services, reassuring that BT will provide support throughout the transition. Customers can expect to retain their existing numbers, with costs remaining stable as the switch to Digital Voice should not result in increased bills.
Most households will simply need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets, eliminating the need for engineer visits. However, some exceptions may arise, requiring customers to contact their providers for assistance.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the significance of heeding messages from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential connections, underlining the substantial upgrades Digital Voice brings to the UK’s communication infrastructure.
Additionally, BT advised customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their providers promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements are in place.
Digital Voice, BT’s innovative home phone service, operates through broadband technology, offering advanced features like Multi Call for conference calls and call diversion to various phone numbers, including mobile devices. The service promises enhanced call quality and modern conveniences, though compatible Digital Home phones are necessary to benefit fully.
The transition to Digital Voice is expected to be seamless for most households, with the service cost integrated into existing broadband packages without any additional charges.
