UK Schools Brace for Record Heatwave, Closures

Published on

Hundreds of schools are making preparations for closures as a red weather warning for extreme heat is set to take effect on Wednesday. The anticipated surge in temperatures, potentially reaching up to 40C this week, is expected to break multiple records, including the highest recorded temperature in the UK at 40.3C in July 2022 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

In response to the extreme heat, some schools have shifted to online teaching, while others have adjusted their schedules to end by midday. Parents are reminded that they are entitled to up to four weeks of unpaid parental leave annually, which can be utilized in situations like sudden school closures.

The impending heatwave is also likely to disrupt transportation services on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting National Rail to advise individuals to travel only if absolutely necessary during these days.

For updates on school closures in your area, you can check the status on the government’s website. While schools are encouraged to remain open where safe and feasible, West Berkshire Council acknowledges the challenging circumstances schools are facing and emphasizes the priority of ensuring the health and safety of students and staff.

Met Office press officer Grahame Madge highlighted that the peak temperature of 39C on Thursday, particularly in London or the South East, could potentially exceed 39C, emphasizing that humidity levels will compound the intensity of the heatwave.

Several schools have opted to close due to the lack of air conditioning, including Bledlow Ridge School in Buckinghamshire citing concerns about indoor temperatures rising significantly without adequate cooling.

The impact of the heatwave is leading to school closures across various regions, with Somerset Council reporting around 100 schools closing over the next few days. Similarly, councils in Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire are expecting partial closures in approximately 100 and 86 schools, respectively.

As a precautionary measure, some schools have permitted students to wear PE kits instead of formal uniforms to cope with the heat. The extreme weather conditions are anticipated to prompt hundreds of schools to either fully or partially close in the coming days as temperatures soar to unprecedented levels.

A red weather warning has been issued for extreme heat covering a wide area from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham, effective from Wednesday morning to Thursday evening. This alert comes as temperatures approach the UK’s all-time high of 40.3C recorded in July 2022.
