“UK Scientists Pioneer Successful Brain Rehab for Long Covid”

Published on

UK scientists have developed the first successful brain rehabilitation program for Long Covid patients. The program, consisting of ten weeks of one-to-one video sessions with a therapist, effectively reduced symptoms like brain fog, enabling patients to resume work and hobbies. A study conducted by University College London on 78 Long Covid patients demonstrated the feasibility of cognitive rehabilitation, offering hope to many families affected by long-lasting Covid-19 symptoms.

Dr. Martina Vanova, the lead author, highlighted the prevalence of cognitive difficulties among Long Covid patients, affecting everyday functionality and quality of life. The program, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, focused on enhancing working memory and concentration, addressing common issues such as forgetfulness and distractibility.

One participant, Emma Sullivan, shared her positive experience with the program, emphasizing how it improved her ability to concentrate and manage daily tasks effectively. The techniques used in the program included setting timers for work intervals, reducing distractions, and forming habits to enhance task sequencing and memory retention.

Professor Dennis Chan, the chief investigator, emphasized the program’s success in aiding Long Covid patients in overcoming brain fog and returning to normal function. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, revealed significant improvements in cognitive function and goal attainment among participants who underwent cognitive rehabilitation compared to those receiving standard care.

Dr. Aida Suarez-Gonzalez, a joint senior author, expressed optimism about the program’s potential as a valuable treatment option for individuals with cognitive Long Covid symptoms. The study’s findings indicated sustained benefits from cognitive rehabilitation, offering hope for those struggling with long-term Covid-related cognitive issues.
