“UK Warns of Youth Being Recruited as Foreign State Agents”

Published on

Counter Terrorism Police have disclosed that individuals as young as 15 have been apprehended for serving as agents of foreign states.

Authorities have cautioned that youth are being enlisted by countries like China, Russia, and Iran due to being cost-effective and easily replaceable assets. National Coordinator Vicki Evans from Counter Terrorism Police expressed concerns over the prevalent use of proxies, emphasizing the need for public awareness.

Evans highlighted the diverse nature of proxies, emphasizing that individuals may unknowingly be targeted in various settings such as workplaces or homes. She stressed that recruitment transcends geographical boundaries and is a localized issue within the UK.

Issuing a direct warning to young people involved in proxy activities, Evans emphasized the potential legal consequences and the enhanced powers now available to combat such actions.

Since December 2023, five individuals have been sentenced to over 50 years in total for their involvement in proxy activities. Counter Terrorism Police affirmed their commitment to relentless pursuit and prosecution of offenders.

Following the Royal Assent received by the National Security (State Threats) Bill, Evans addressed the press, underscoring the legislation’s importance in providing new powers to the Home Secretary to safeguard the public against hostile foreign activities and their proxies.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the government’s priority of ensuring the safety of the country and communities. She stated that decisive measures have been taken to counter the escalating threat posed by aggressive foreign entities.

The new powers granted under the legislation aim to dismantle and deter hostile activities, empowering law enforcement and intelligence agencies to confront foreign proxies and safeguard the nation’s institutions and democratic values.

The National Security Act 2023 equips law enforcement agencies with enhanced tools to detect, disrupt, and prosecute individuals involved in hostile activities and modern offenses.

Notably, the utilization of the new legislation has led to multiple charges and convictions, including cases like the involvement of Russia’s proxies in an arson attack in east London and the targeting of Hong Kong residents in the UK.
