“Ukraine Launches Devastating Strikes on Russian Military Sites”

Published on

Ukraine retaliated against a deadly Russian drone and missile attack on its civilians by launching significant deep-strike operations targeting military and energy sites within Russia. Devastating drone strikes hit a crucial oil terminal in St. Petersburg, the Kronstadt naval base, and a defense complex in the Tambov region overnight and into the morning.

This response followed a series of strikes across Ukraine that resulted in 22 fatalities and over 100 injuries, marking one of the most severe Kremlin assaults in recent months. Fires erupted in St. Petersburg after the Ukrainian ‘kamikaze’ drones struck the Petersburg Oil Terminal from a distance of 1,130 miles.

Visible smoke and loud explosions were reported in St. Petersburg, causing a major embarrassment to Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially given his personal connection to the city. The timing of the attack, just before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, known as the “Russian Davos,” added to the humiliation for Putin.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a key annual business event for the Kremlin, was scheduled to take place shortly after the strike. The targeted facility, JSC Petersburg Oil Terminal, is a significant oil processing site in northwestern Russia, further complicating matters for Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the effectiveness of long-range sanctions, emphasizing that strategic facilities in Russia were successfully hit without endangering civilians. The strikes on the Kronstadt base were also acknowledged as part of the operation to bring about peace.

Prior to the St. Petersburg incident, reports surfaced of another strike in Russia’s Tambov Oblast, resulting in a fire at the Progress plant in Michurinsk. This facility is known for producing advanced control systems and equipment for military aviation and missile technology.

The retaliatory strikes by Ukraine come at a time when Russia is already facing challenges due to repeated attacks on its oil infrastructure by Ukrainian forces. The financial strain on Russia, largely dependent on oil revenues to fund its military operations in Ukraine, has intensified public discontent with Putin’s prolonged conflict.

Putin’s initial expectations of a short-lived military campaign have been shattered as casualties among Russian troops continue to mount on the Ukrainian frontlines. The escalating conflict is posing significant challenges for Putin, with a growing realization among the Russian populace that the war may not be easily won.
