Ukraine’s top military leader, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been dismissed following widespread protests triggered by the removal of the popular Defense Minister. The Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, announced his ousting a week ago due to disagreements with Syrskyi, leading to street demonstrations highlighting divisions within the military regarding their approach towards Russia.

Acknowledging the public outcry, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence in Fedorov, assuring that he would retain his position in the administration. On July 21, Zelensky extended an offer to Fedorov for a significant government role aimed at unifying the technical aspects of the state for its advancement, though it remains uncertain whether Fedorov has accepted the proposal.

Fedorov, aged 35, is recognized for his innovative technological strategies and recruitment methods. During his six-month tenure as Defense Minister, Ukraine witnessed military achievements, making his removal a subject of intense backlash against Syrskyi.

In response to the public sentiment, Zelensky engaged with senior military officials, emphasizing the importance of listening to societal feedback. Syrskyi, in an effort to address the situation, penned an apology to Fedorov in a local military publication, taking responsibility for initiatives like establishing a separate drone unit and refuting claims of unsupportive drone usage.

Replacing Syrskyi is Mykhailo Drapatyi, commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, known for a viral 2014 video where he breached a separatist barricade in Mariupol with an armored vehicle. Fedorov congratulated Drapatyi on his new role, expressing optimism for progress in the fight for freedom and justice. Additionally, Fedorov extended gratitude to Syrskyi for his dedication to defending Ukraine.
