“UK’s Largest Illegal Dumpsite Uncovered, Linked to Flooding”

Published on

A massive 280,000-ton waste site has been uncovered as the largest illegal dumping ground in the UK. Soil and debris from construction projects are suspected to have been unlawfully disposed of on a 50-acre area near Northwich, Cheshire, causing the ground level to rise by two meters. This dumping activity has been linked to an increase in flooding incidents affecting nearby farmlands and residential areas.

There are numerous illegal dumpsites scattered across England, with at least 11 identified as “super sites” containing substantial amounts of waste. Despite the closure of over 700 illegal tips in the 2024/25 period, recent data from the Environment Agency shows that around 517 illegal dumpsites remained active by the end of the past year.

Among the notable sites awaiting cleanup are the Cheshire location, two 50,000-ton sites in Lancashire and Cornwall, a 36,000-ton site in Kent, and a 20,000-ton dump in Oxfordshire. Many of these sites are situated in rural areas, often camouflaged within agricultural land. Law enforcement authorities indicate that organized criminal groups are behind many of these operations, offering lower disposal rates than legal facilities to make profits.

Businesses are typically required to pay fees to use authorized landfill sites based on the waste quantity and type, with an additional landfill tax of over £126 per tonne. The Environment Agency has expressed its commitment to combatting waste crime and disrupting those benefiting from illegal waste activities.

Despite identifications and prosecutions of culprits in numerous cases, environmental activists and local residents in various parts of England complain about the lack of action in cleaning up these illegal dumpsites. The involvement of serious organized crime groups in managing many of these sites has led to comparisons with the severity of the issue to the illicit drug trade, as remarked by former Environment Agency chief Sir James Bevan.

These criminal groups often bring specialized equipment to remote rural locations, leading to an influx of waste-carrying vehicles. The waste ranges from household trash to construction materials, which are processed for easier disposal. Loads of waste are then transported to be dumped in growing mounds, buried underground, or stored in hidden locations. Recent law enforcement operations in Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Worcestershire resulted in significant cash seizures and arrests related to suspected money laundering and waste crimes.

Inspector Dave Wise from West Mercia Police emphasized the complexity of combating waste crime, particularly in cases involving organized crime networks engaged in financial crimes and environmental pollution. Concerns about the extent of illegal waste activities surfaced prominently when around 20,000 tonnes of waste were illegally deposited near the A34 at Kidlington in Oxfordshire over several months.

Emma Viner, the Environment Agency’s enforcement and investigations manager, expressed shared concerns with the public regarding waste crime and highlighted ongoing enforcement actions. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) spokesperson mentioned collaborative efforts across government to eradicate illegal waste activities nationwide and hold responsible parties accountable. Enhanced support for the Environment Agency, increased enforcement resources, and stricter penalties for violators are part of the government’s strategy to address waste crime effectively.
