The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog has expressed grave concern over North Korea’s significant advancements in nuclear weapons production.

This development comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East regarding Iranian nuclear capabilities, with the US raising alarms about potential nuclear warfare. North Korea is reportedly in possession of around 50 nuclear warheads, although doubts linger about its ability to miniaturize them for long-range ballistic missiles.

During a recent visit to Seoul, the Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, confirmed a surge in activity at North Korea’s main nuclear facility, Yongbyon. The country has reportedly intensified work at various nuclear installations, including reactors and reprocessing units.

Experts suggest that North Korea has gained a functional nuclear arsenal, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland, since its initial nuclear test two decades ago. Under Kim Jong Un’s leadership, the country has defied UN sanctions by expanding its nuclear weapons program.

Recent reports from a US think tank indicate that North Korea has completed a new facility for uranium enrichment at Yongbyon, increasing concerns about the country’s nuclear capabilities. The construction of such facilities without international declaration could significantly boost North Korea’s nuclear weapons stockpile.

Despite not conducting nuclear tests since 2017, North Korea has continued to enhance its missile technology and increase its weapons cache, aligning with Kim’s pledge to rapidly expand its nuclear program. Diplomatic efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions have faced setbacks, especially following unsuccessful summits between Kim and former US President Donald Trump.

The IAEA has labeled North Korea’s nuclear program a flagrant violation of UN resolutions and maintains readiness to verify its nuclear activities. The country’s pursuit of nuclearization remains a focal point of international concern, given its strategic implications and potential threats to global security.
