A tragic incident occurred as an expectant mother’s unborn child lost its life in a car collision during a police pursuit. The woman, in her twenties, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by the baby’s father when a car, fleeing from law enforcement due to cloned number plates, crashed into them on Lewisham Way late on Saturday, June 13.
The pregnant woman, in critical condition, was swiftly transported to the hospital by the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the baby did not survive. The mother is currently receiving medical care, with a stable condition, while the driver of their vehicle escaped unscathed.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle, a 29-year-old man, was apprehended on suspicion of multiple offenses, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of class A drugs. He also sustained injuries in the crash but is in a non-life-threatening state.
An investigation is underway with the crime scene cleared, and the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the baby’s death following the police chase. Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences to the affected family and urged anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward.
