Dean Povey initially suspected a scam when he received an unexpected call regarding an unknown relative, Lilian May, who had left him an inheritance. The news of the inheritance arrived in 2024, following the passing of Dean’s father due to cancer. Finders International, a leading probate research firm in the UK and Ireland, managed the case, specializing in locating heirs for individuals who pass away without a will.

Initially uncertain about the inheritance amount, Dean shared his astonishment upon discovering more about his extended family through a family tree provided by Finders. The revelation that his great-grandparents had cared for Lilian at some point added a new layer to his family history.

The inheritance came as a welcome relief during a challenging period for Dean, who lost his mother in January 2026 and was battling Hughes-Stovin Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder affecting a small number of individuals in the UK. Despite facing severe health issues, Dean remained grateful for the unexpected financial support.

Each year in the UK, numerous estates are left intestate, prompting authorities and probate genealogists to search for surviving relatives. Simultaneously, a significant number of individuals pass away alone, often with minimal contact with their families, underscoring the importance of wills and family connections.

Probate genealogist James Booth highlighted the complexities of tracing Lilian’s history, noting her challenging upbringing and limited information about her past. Extensive research led to the identification of Dean and the other beneficiaries, shedding light on Lilian’s life story and her connection to her distant relatives.
