The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed to de-escalate tensions following recent strikes in and around the Strait of Hormuz. A US official mentioned that both countries will halt hostilities temporarily to allow for ongoing technical discussions based on a memorandum of understanding signed on June 17.
Iran has not officially responded to the news of ceasing strikes. The US conducted retaliatory airstrikes against Iran on Friday after a drone attack targeted a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz a day prior.
US President Donald Trump criticized the drone attack as a breach of their Ceasefire Agreement. Following the attack, the US military targeted Iranian drone and missile storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites, as confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM).
According to CENTCOM, Iranian forces used a one-way attack drone to strike the Ever Lovely, a Singapore-flagged ship, as it was leaving the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center reported that a cargo vessel was hit southeast of Oman’s port of Dahit on Thursday.
The owner of the Ever Lovely, Evergreen, stated that the ship was following the recommended route through the strait when the incident occurred. Fortunately, all crew members and cargo remained unharmed.
