A federal judge in the United States has issued an apology for engaging in inappropriate behavior with a police officer in her chambers and subsequently lying about the incident. The investigation into US District Judge Eleanor Ross revealed that she had a sexual relationship with a high-ranking police officer in the courthouse, attended a political event, and initially denied the accusations when confronted.
In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, Ross admitted that her actions were wrong and inexcusable. She expressed regret for the impact her behavior had on others, acknowledging that they deserved better treatment.
Appointed to the bench in 2014 by former President Barack Obama, Ross faced disciplinary action following reports from a law clerk about the inappropriate conduct with the police officer during work hours. The investigation also highlighted issues of improper staff supervision and verbal outbursts towards employees.
After confirming the allegations, Ross received a private reprimand and agreed not to pursue the position of chief judge in the district. She also sent apology letters to former law clerks involved in the incident.
A special committee appointed by Chief Judge William Pryor conducted a detailed investigation, which revealed that the police officer frequently visited Ross’s chambers during lunchtime in uniform. Witness accounts suggested possible instances of sexual activity in the judge’s office.
While Ross admitted to the extramarital relationship with the officer, she denied mistreating staff. The judge also clarified her attendance at a social event, maintaining that it was separate from a political gathering.
Ross expressed remorse in a letter to the clerk, acknowledging her failures and committing to preventing similar incidents in the future. Calls for Ross’s impeachment have been made by two Georgia congressmen, leaving the decision in the hands of the House Judiciary Committee.
Federal judges hold lifetime appointments and can only be removed through impeachment by Congress. The ongoing situation underscores the need for accountability and ethical conduct within the judiciary.
