The United States has reported that approximately 80 individuals lost their lives when their submarine sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka.
The Iranian vessel was returning to Iran from a port in eastern India when it was hit. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated during a Pentagon press briefing that the US military had targeted and sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean using a torpedo.
Although the specific ship was not mentioned, this announcement came after the Sri Lankan navy confirmed the rescue of 32 individuals following a distress signal from the Iranian IRIS Dena, which was carrying around 140 passengers who are currently unaccounted for.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed Parliament that Sri Lanka’s navy received distress signals from the IRIS Dena, carrying 180 passengers, prompting a swift deployment of naval and air force assets for a rescue operation.
Upon reaching the reported location, no trace of the ship was found, only oil patches and life rafts with people floating in the water, as described by Navy spokesman Commander Buddhika Sampath. While several deceased individuals were found at sea, an exact count was not disclosed.
Among the survivors are seven individuals undergoing emergency medical treatment, with one in critical condition and others being treated for minor injuries, as confirmed by Dr. Anil Jasinghe, a senior health ministry official.
