“US Space Command Chief Warns of Russian Nuclear Threat in Space”

Published on

Russia is suspected of planning to deploy a nuclear weapon in space that could trigger worldwide chaos by targeting satellites. The Head of US Space Command, General Stephen Whiting, has raised concerns about Moscow’s potential use of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon, capable of disrupting thousands of satellites and causing communication breakdowns globally. This strategy has been likened to a “Space Pearl Harbor.”

General Whiting emphasized that the US is closely monitoring Russia’s activities, highlighting a pattern of aggressive behavior in space following the conflict in Ukraine. He pointed out that Russia has been engaging in significant satellite communication and GPS jamming, posing risks even to civilian aircraft.

In a podcast interview, General Whiting expressed apprehension over Russia’s investments in counter-space weapons, including the contemplation of deploying a nuclear anti-satellite weapon in orbit. This move could jeopardize satellites in low Earth orbit, creating an intolerable situation for all involved parties.

From the Russian perspective, targeting space systems is seen as a means to counter the perceived strength of the US and NATO in conventional warfare. General Whiting stressed the importance of addressing this threat, as it could potentially level the playing field in conflicts.

Deploying a nuclear weapon in space would violate the Outer Space Treaty, to which Russia is a signatory. The warning from US military officials is the most forceful public statement to date on the danger posed by Moscow. Concerns were initially raised in February 2024 by Pentagon officials during a closed-door briefing for Congress members.

Experts caution that a nuclear explosion in low Earth orbit could devastate a significant portion of the approximately 10,000 satellites currently in space, impacting crucial services such as military intelligence, communications, internet, mobile phone networks, and GPS systems. General Whiting highlighted the real-world consequences of Russia’s GPS jamming, which is already affecting civilian flights in Europe.

Notably, both Russia and China are rapidly advancing their space weapon capabilities, with China developing various anti-satellite technologies. General Whiting urged the UK government to allocate more resources to space defense, citing disparities in defense spending on space compared to other countries.

While acknowledging the growing space arms race, General Whiting emphasized that a conflict in space is not inevitable. The primary goal remains deterring such scenarios to preserve the benefits of space exploration for humanity.
