Weston, honored with a CBE in 2016 for his charitable contributions to British veterans, criticized Trump for disregarding the human impact of his actions on the Falklands population and veterans.
The US President suggested that the state visit by the British monarchy could help repair the strained relations between the two allied nations.
In response to queries about King Charles’s potential role in improving relations, Trump praised the King’s character and expressed confidence in a positive outcome from the visit.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper affirmed the UK’s sovereignty over the Falklands, noting that self-determination lies with the islanders.
A representative of the Falkland Islands Government highlighted the residents’ overwhelming support for remaining a UK Overseas Territory through a sovereignty referendum in 2013.
The Pentagon refrained from commenting on the leaked email but assured that credible options would be provided to ensure allies fulfill their commitments effectively.
