In regions of northern India, where temperatures can plunge below freezing during winter, elephants at a conservation center in Mathura faced the challenge of staying warm. Villagers nearby came up with a creative solution by knitting large, colorful woolly garments to protect the elephants from the cold.

The initiative, captured in photos shared on Reddit, showcased the elephants adorned in specially crafted jumpers and legwear. These elephants, under the care of the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center, were rescued from various forms of exploitation, including illegal captivity and trafficking.

Kartick Satyanarayan, Wildlife SOS co-founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of shielding the elephants from the harsh winter conditions to prevent health issues such as pneumonia and arthritis. Geeta Seshamani, the organization’s secretary and co-founder, highlighted the goal of providing a safe environment where these rescued elephants can thrive.
