“Water bills in England and Wales to rise by £33 annually”

Published on

Starting this April, water bills in England and Wales are set to increase by an average of £33 per year. This represents a 5.4% hike, equivalent to £2.70 more each month, surpassing the current inflation rate of 3.4%.

Water companies have been granted permission by regulator Ofwat to raise average bills by 36% over a five-year period until 2030. The increase is necessary to support a £104 billion investment program aimed at improving infrastructure and preventing sewage spills, as stated by Water UK. However, critics argue that the rising costs will add to the financial burden of families already facing higher expenses.

In response to concerns, Water UK announced plans to provide support to an additional 300,000 households in 2026/27 through social tariffs, bringing the total number of supported households to around 2.5 million. Social tariffs offer discounted rates for water and sewerage charges, with an expected average discount of approximately 40%.

David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, emphasized the necessity of the increase to fund crucial upgrades for water supplies and environmental protection. He highlighted the assistance that will be offered to millions of households in the form of significant bill discounts.

Mike Keil, from the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), acknowledged the growing concerns over water bill affordability and the need for transparency in spending. He stressed the importance of ensuring that those facing financial challenges receive adequate support.

Chris Walters, interim Chief Executive of Ofwat, emphasized the oversight role in monitoring company performance and ensuring accountability in delivering promised improvements. He also highlighted the increased support available for customers struggling to pay their bills.

While consumers cannot switch water providers, there are ways to save on water bills. Simple actions like reducing shower time and using water-saving devices can lead to significant savings. Additionally, installing a water meter, as suggested by financial expert Martin Lewis, could result in cost savings for households with more bedrooms than occupants.
