A father triggered a significant armed police reaction while working out in a park with a weighted exercise vest. The man, in his forties, was seen with his hands raised at a park in Salford, part of Greater Manchester, as snipers took positions on Friday. Authorities were alerted at 11:52 a.m. about a “suspicious male” in Mandley Park wearing a vest and carrying items that some mistook for wires.

Amid a flurry of online panic fueled by misleading images and videos, false claims spread that the man was wearing a “suicide bomb” or “bomb vest.” Greater Manchester Police (GMP) later clarified that it was a misunderstanding, revealing that the man was actually exercising in the park with a weighted vest and a skipping rope at the outdoor gym facility.

A GMP spokesperson mentioned that the park is located near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, the site of a previous terror incident. The man, who opted to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, expressed gratitude for the precautionary measures, stating, “I said to the police ‘it’s better safe than sorry.'”

Originally from Albania and residing in the UK for 25 years, the man explained that he uses the weighted vest and skipping rope as part of his routine exercise regimen to address health issues. He emphasized the importance of staying active and following medical advice to manage his diabetes and heart condition.

Following the incident, where he was briefly detained and later released, the man acknowledged the understandable concerns in the Jewish community in Salford but praised the police for their professionalism. GMP confirmed that no further action would be taken against the man, reassuring that there was no threat to the community.
