A coroner has expressed worries about the safety of barriers at Wembley Stadium following the tragic death of an Oasis fan who fell from a height during one of the band’s concerts, as revealed in a preliminary inquest review. The deceased, identified as landscape gardener Lee Claydon, aged 45 and from Bournemouth, Dorset, passed away after the incident at the stadium in north-west London on August 2 last year.
During a session at Barnet Coroner’s Court, senior coroner Andrew Walker mandated a detailed examination of the barriers on level five of the venue where the unfortunate incident occurred. The review is expected to assess the design, height, and positioning of the barriers and evaluate whether they comply with safety standards for attendees.
The coroner emphasized the importance of conducting a risk assessment of the barrier placement, determining if any alterations have been made to the barriers since installation, and evaluating the overall safety measures at the stadium to ensure a secure environment for visitors.
Prompted by a received letter from a former Wembley employee expressing safety concerns, Mr. Walker stressed the necessity of swiftly addressing any potential safety issues at the stadium to prevent future incidents.
The letter, shared with the Metropolitan Police, will also be made available to Brent Council, Mr. Claydon’s family, and the Football Association for further review and action.
The inquest proceedings have been adjourned until April 29 for a follow-up review. The Met Police concluded their investigation into the incident, ruling out foul play or suicidal intent, attributing Mr. Claydon’s death to a tragic accident. A post-mortem examination indicated the cause of death as “multiple bodily injuries.”
The fatal fall occurred during Oasis’s Live ’25 reunion tour at Wembley Stadium, prompting the band to express their condolences to the bereaved family and friends.
