“Which? Report: Smaller Mobile Networks Outshine Big Four”

Published on

A recent report by consumer group Which? has revealed that major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling behind smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. The study, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

Which? aimed to assess how well providers are meeting customer needs, with results indicating that the traditional “Big Four” are trailing behind many smaller rivals. Talkmobile secured the top ranking, with Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY following closely.

Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth overall, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks. Price emerged as a significant factor, with the report showing that customers on the Big Four paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks.

Despite the lower prices, the coverage quality remains on par, as many smaller providers utilize major network infrastructures, offering similar signal strength and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands. Switching between networks is also simpler than anticipated, with some users able to transition in as little as 10 minutes.

A member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a significant price increase, opting for a more affordable SMARTY plan and saving around £200 annually. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outshine larger firms by offering better customer service and cost-effective deals, urging dissatisfied customers to consider switching to providers offering better value.

The rankings from Which? showcased Talkmobile at the top with an 83% score, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, SMARTY, and other leading providers. The report underlines the trend where smaller networks are excelling in customer satisfaction and affordability compared to industry giants.
