A massive wildfire rampaging through southwest France has grown so intense that its smoke column triggered a thunderstorm, leading to the ignition of numerous new fires. Recently captured images following the outbreak near Saumos, in France’s Gironde department, depict a frightening wall of smoke stretching for miles into the sky. This blaze, covering 162 square miles, began on July 22 and has rapidly devastated the region.
Similar to other recent fires in France and Spain, this wildfire has forced the evacuation of 220,000 people and the abandonment of 240 homes. Notably, the Saumos fire is distinct as it has evolved into a dangerously self-sustaining entity, creating a rare phenomenon known as pyrocumulonimbus, typically only observed in extreme environments.
Pyrocumulonimbus, or pyroCb, are uncommon in Europe, usually forming in more severe conditions found in North America and Australia. These fire-induced storm clouds, emerging from intense fires, have never been encountered by French firefighters before, according to the country’s national firefighters federation.
The departmental fire and rescue service reported the generation of a pyrocumulonimbus just two days after its inception, with heat and smoke rising into a massive black, electrified thundercloud. Fire meteorologist Theodore Giannaros explained that these firestorms result from a combination of extreme heat, smoke, and moisture, resembling a campfire producing a storm-like cloud due to its intense heat.
Pyrocumulonimbus formations require very hot, dry air near the ground, with cooler, moister air above it. As the hot air laden with smoke and moisture rises rapidly, water vapor condenses around ash particles, forming ice crystals that generate electrical charges, similar to a regular thunderstorm.
Giannaros emphasized the feedback loop nature of pyrocumulonimbus, creating its weather system atop the fire and complicating prediction efforts. These systems can also give rise to swirling columns of flame, like fire whirls, described as dust devils made of fire and heat instead of dust.
While rare in Europe, pyrocumulonimbus occurrences have been recorded, with Portugal experiencing one during the deadly 2017 fire season. With a looming 40C heatwave expected to exacerbate the situation, more wildfires are predicted, increasing challenges for firefighters. President Emmanuel Macron labeled the crisis the most severe since World War Two, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the Gironde blaze during a visit to the affected area.
The escalating wildfire crisis in France is anticipated to worsen in the coming days, with around 300,000 individuals displaced in the past week alone. Macron highlighted the critical nature of the situation, urging resilience in the challenging times ahead.
