The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNA) highlighted the impact on individuals traveling to Thunder Bay for medical appointments, with local hotels quickly reaching capacity. This surge in demand for accommodations affects evacuees, emergency personnel, and tourists visiting the city.
Monica Hemeon, vice-president of regional services for SLFNHA, emphasized longstanding challenges with transportation and lodging for residents leaving their communities to access healthcare services not available locally. Issues include delays in arranging medical transportation and patients missing appointments due to lack of communication. Hemeon mentioned reports of up to 150 missed appointments in a single month across various communities.
The influx of visitors to Thunder Bay, such as attendees of the recent Canadian Lakehead Exhibition, has exacerbated the scarcity of available hotel rooms, making it harder for SLFNHA members to secure lodging. Hemeon stressed the critical nature of timely appointments for remote communities that are only accessible by air travel, underscoring the importance of advanced planning and proper medical care during transit.
In response to the accommodation challenges posed by the wildfires, the Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) advised health-care providers to consider rescheduling non-urgent appointments. ISC acknowledged the impact of reduced hotel availability and indicated ongoing efforts to support urgent medical visits despite these constraints.
