Newly released maps illustrate the extensive wildfires that are still spreading in the south-western region of France, leading to the evacuation of nearly 4,000 additional individuals from popular tourist destinations.

Over 260,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes in the Gironde area, where the initial fire erupted last week in a pine forest close to the village of Saumos, approximately 25 miles west of Bordeaux.

The recent evacuation directive encompasses campsites, vacation villages, tourist accommodations, and recreational parks near the Lacanau resort, as confirmed by Gironde regional authorities.

The fires have devastated the Cap Ferret peninsula, scorching an area of 42,000 hectares, equivalent to four times the size of Paris, although containment efforts were effective overnight.

Authorities reported on Tuesday morning that the primary blaze has been contained with no expansion in the burned region. However, concerns persist regarding the potential for reignition due to rising temperatures and decreasing humidity levels.

The national weather service, Météo-France, has forecasted the onset of a new heatwave in France starting today, with temperatures expected to soar across the country. The south-western region may experience temperatures reaching 37C, with other cities like Nantes, Paris, Lyon, and Toulouse anticipating highs of 32C to 35C.

Temperatures are projected to climb even higher on Wednesday, with intense heat spreading throughout western France. Parts of the south-west could face scorching temperatures of up to 40C, while Paris, Lyon, and other areas are expected to reach mid to high 30s.

A yellow heat warning has been issued for Gironde from midday on Tuesday, as per the weather service alert.

French President Emmanuel Macron characterized the ongoing fire situation as an unparalleled crisis, labeling it the most severe fire-related emergency in France since World War II.

According to the interior ministry, approximately 448 square miles have been consumed by wildfires in France this year, indicating a significant impact.

Europe has been identified as the fastest-warming continent globally, with temperatures rising at a rate double the global average, as highlighted by the European Union’s Copernicus climate service.
