“Wildfires Threaten Mackenzie Valley Highway Progress”

Published on

In the Northwest Territories, a climate expert warns that the shrinking window to construct a major infrastructure project is influenced by longer fire seasons, bigger fires, and thawing permafrost. The federal government recently announced a halt to work on the Mackenzie Valley Highway due to uncontrollable wildfires, prioritizing the safety of Canadians. Ze’ev Gedalof, a climate scientist, notes that wildfires are becoming a recurring challenge in the N.W.T., coinciding with shorter ice road seasons, making construction logistics more difficult.

Over 200 active wildfires, mostly uncontained, are currently raging in the N.W.T., prompting concerns about the changing wildfire frequency due to climate change. The Mackenzie Valley Highway, envisioned for decades to enhance living standards and assert territorial sovereignty, faces uncertainties amid escalating wildfire seasons. Government officials acknowledge the unpredictability of natural disasters like wildfires and stress the importance of preparedness and public communication to mitigate their impact.

Premier R.J. Simpson voices the significance of completing the highway project, expressing the sentiment that failing to do so would be a substantial setback for the territory. Despite wildfire disruptions, he remains optimistic about commencing full construction in the upcoming year, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to northern development.
