A woman missed her honeymoon after she fell from a hotel room window on her wedding night, as revealed in the High Court in Ireland. Jackie Sexton (formerly Tyrrell) brought a case against Deebert House Hotel Ltd in Kilmallock, Co Limerick after the incident on her wedding day, February 29, 2020. The court was informed that she sustained fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, and various injuries to her back, leg, hip, and pelvic bone.
Despite the accusations of negligence and breach of duty by Ms. Sexton, the hotel disputed liability for the fall. The hotel contended that it had installed window restrictors in 2014 and was compliant with all building standards at the time.
During the court proceedings, Ms. Sexton recounted that she and her husband had returned to their hotel room after their wedding reception around 3:30 am. She mentioned that due to the alcohol consumed that day, her memory was hazy, with her last recollection being sitting by the window in her underwear with her feet on a table. She explained that she fell while smoking a cigarette at the window.
Following the fall, Ms. Sexton woke up in a hospital the next day, unaware of the incident until her husband informed her. She suffered multiple injuries, including fractures, a collapsed lung, and other severe damages. The accident not only impacted her physically but also emotionally and financially, as her active lifestyle and various job opportunities were compromised due to ongoing pain and rehabilitation.
After negotiations between both parties, the court case was resolved without any costs being ordered. The judge conveyed her best wishes to Ms. Sexton as the case, initially expected to last five days, was concluded on a positive note.
