A court has been informed that a woman who tragically ended her own life had confided in a friend about enduring abuse from her spouse. Christopher Trybus, residing in Swindon, Wiltshire, faces charges related to the death of Tarryn Baird, who passed away by suicide in November 2017 at 34 years old. The 43-year-old is also accused of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, as well as two counts of rape, alleged to have occurred in October and November 2016 at Winchester Crown Court.

The charge of coercive control asserts that Trybus exerted control over Ms. Baird through violence, sexual assault, surveillance, financial restrictions, threats of disclosure of private information to her family, and isolation from her relatives.

During the trial, Elizabeth Clarke, known as Libby, testified that she had initially met Ms. Baird at an optical firm in Swindon, where they connected over their husbands’ work habits. Their friendship continued after Ms. Baird departed from the company.

Text messages between the two women were presented in court, detailing Ms. Baird’s allegations of abuse by her husband in early 2017. Ms. Baird described instances where Trybus had turned violent and expressed fear towards him. She disclosed being hurt by him and feeling constantly monitored and controlled.

Mrs. Clarke testified that Ms. Baird had shown her physical injuries and shared images of bruises. She also indicated that Ms. Baird had sought help from Women’s Aid and had contemplated leaving her home due to the abuse.

The prosecution alleged that Trybus engaged in a pattern of coercive and manipulative behavior towards Ms. Baird, which ultimately led to her tragic death. The defendant, originally from South Africa, denies all charges, and the trial is ongoing.
