A tragic incident occurred at a building designated for demolition in Osaka, Japan, where a worker lost his life after an elevator-related accident. The emergency response teams were alerted to the situation at the former Sharp Sakai Plant early in the morning. Initially reported as an elevator collapse on a 62-year-old worker, it was later revealed that a detached counterweight led to the fatal outcome.

According to reports from Asashi TV, the counterweight that caused the accident weighed about 10 tonnes and is crucial for balancing the lift system. The incident took place during demolition work at the site, where workers were dismantling the lift system. The victim, a contractor working on the demolition project, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The former Sharp Sakai Plant, previously a production site for LCD panels, is undergoing demolition for redevelopment purposes.
