The annual World Nomad Games, a celebration of traditional nomadic sports and culture, are currently underway in Kyrgyzstan. Athletes representing 104 nations are participating in the event that highlights the sports of Turkic communities in Central Asia. The games, featuring various competitions, will conclude this Sunday.
Located in Kyrchyn Gorge, approximately 314 kilometers east of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, the venue is bustling with participants and spectators. Images captured at the 6th edition of the Games showcase the vibrant atmosphere, including participants parading with majestic golden eagles for a competition.
One of the captivating events includes participants engaging with hunting birds, demonstrating their skills and bond with the animals. Another thrilling competition involves riders from Kazakhstan showcasing their expertise in the traditional equestrian discipline of “tyiyn enmei,” where they must gallop at speed to pick up coins or a pouch from the ground while on horseback.
Additionally, horse riders from Uzbekistan and Russia are seen competing in the traditional Central Asian sports of “kok-boru” or “buzkashi,” where mounted players vie for points by tossing the carcass of a headless goat into a designated area. Archery contests and displays of craftsmanship skills, such as wool spooling and pottery-making, add further cultural richness to the event, offering spectators a holistic experience beyond the competitive sports.
