The World Snooker Championship has secured a deal to remain at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield until at least 2045, following an agreement between the World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council. Concerns about outdated facilities and limited seating capacity have been addressed with a planned £45 million renovation project that will increase seating by 500. The Crucible has been the host venue for the World Championship since 1977, attracting fans from around the globe each spring.

The championship will continue at the Crucible in its current configuration for the next three tournaments before undergoing renovations after the 2028 event. During the redevelopment phase, the championship will temporarily relocate to another venue before returning to the upgraded theatre. The agreement ensures that the event will stay at the Crucible until at least 2045, with a possibility of extension until 2050, putting an end to years of speculation. Barry Hearn, a prominent figure in snooker, expressed satisfaction with the deal, emphasizing the significance of the Crucible as the tournament’s historic home.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer played a role in securing the championship’s future at the Crucible by facilitating discussions among stakeholders during his visit to Sheffield. Starmer highlighted the UK’s rich cultural and sporting heritage and expressed delight in the confirmation that the World Snooker Championship will continue to be hosted in Sheffield for years to come.

Snooker legend and BBC commentator Stephen Hendry praised the unique atmosphere and historical significance of the Crucible, emphasizing its irreplaceable charm. The upcoming World Championship, starting on April 18 and concluding on May 4, promises a thrilling competition with a £500,000 prize for the winner. Current champion Zhao Xintong from China will defend his title, while Ronnie O’Sullivan aims for a record eighth championship victory.
