Police in Italy are conducting an investigation following the death of a student who passed away after elective surgery to address a rare condition that led to abdominal bloating. Francesca Tucci, aged 24, died three days after the surgery for Wilkie’s syndrome, a gastrointestinal disorder that causes abdominal bloating after consuming specific foods.

Francesca opted for the surgery at Antonio Cardarelli Hospital in Naples after consultations with specialists in Milan and Rome. The procedure, conducted on June 29 under Italy’s intramoenia system, turned critical on July 1 when she started experiencing deteriorating symptoms like vomiting and fainting, prompting the need for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, the subsequent operation was unsuccessful, and Francesca passed away on July 2 shortly after being moved to intensive care.

The Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a manslaughter investigation following a complaint from Francesca’s family. Surgeon Felice Pirozzi, alongside healthcare professionals Giuseppe Magno and Francesca Duro, are under scrutiny as part of the investigative process. Francesca’s family expressed concerns over the handling of the situation, emphasizing the lack of timely and adequate assistance during her critical moments.

Francesca, who resided in Afragola and was close to completing her law degree at Parthenope University, was described by the university as a determined and dedicated young woman with a bright future ahead. Tragically, her promising life was cut short, leaving her family devastated. They lamented the loss of their daughter and criticized the perceived lack of support and attention during her medical emergency.

The family incurred significant expenses for the procedure and hospital stay, adding to their anguish over the tragic outcome. The community mourns the loss of Francesca, a vibrant individual with aspirations for a fruitful future, whose untimely demise has left a profound impact on those who knew her.
