“Young Voters Rally Behind Compensation for WASPI Women”

Published on

A recent poll revealed that two-thirds of young voters support the idea of the Government providing compensation to WASPI women. The campaign has gained strong backing among 18-34 year-olds, with 66% expressing the belief that over three million women born in the 1950s should receive payouts. Angela Madden, the chair of WASPI, cautioned that the government is running out of time to deliver justice.

In the upcoming month, supporters will await a decision from the Government regarding a potential shift in their stance on compensation following the emergence of new evidence. Madden emphasized that the survey results highlight the younger generation’s understanding of the importance of fairness and justice across different age groups.

The survey, conducted by Yonder with 2,095 participants, found that 53% of 18-34 year-olds advocate for a parliamentary debate and vote on the compensation issue. Additionally, 77% believe that individuals affected by maladministration should be able to seek redress without resorting to legal action.

Pressure is mounting on the Government to reconsider its decision against granting compensation ranging from £1,000 to £2,950 to 3.6 million women. Legal proceedings by WASPI for a judicial review have been paused pending the current review outcome.

Madden, aged 71, insisted that only a compensation scheme will be acceptable. She stressed the urgency of the situation, urging Members of Parliament to convey that the government is on the brink of missing its opportunity for resolution.

Campaigners have raised over £250,000 to support their legal efforts. Failures within the DWP led to a lack of proper communication regarding the increase in the state pension age for women, resulting in severe financial repercussions for those affected.

These women faced challenges due to the sudden rise in their state pension age from 60 to 65 and then to 66.
