Zelensky Escalates Preemptive Strikes on Russia

Published on

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced an escalation in pre-emptive strikes on strategic targets deep inside Russia to weaken Vladimir Putin’s capacity for aggression.

In a forceful declaration regarding Kyiv’s deep-strike operations, Zelensky affirmed that Ukrainian intelligence and special forces would ensure that the Russian populace is aware of the ongoing conflict. This statement coincides with the Kremlin’s efforts to pressurize Belarus into direct involvement in the conflict by launching offensives on Ukraine from the northern front.

Zelensky’s warning preceded another long-range attack by Ukrainian special forces on a significant fuel depot in the southern Krasnodar region. This strike, the second in under two weeks, is part of a series aimed at disrupting Putin’s military capabilities. Zelensky emphasized the need for preemptive action against facilities supporting Russia’s war efforts.

The Ukrainian leader attributed the necessity of these actions to Russia’s brutal attacks on Ukrainian territories such as Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk. He stated that Russian aggression was the primary cause of the conflict and emphasized the importance of Russians recognizing their role in the ongoing war. In response to Ukraine’s offensive, Russia retaliated with drone strikes on Zaporizhzhia.

Reports from the US-based Institute for the Study of War indicate that the Kremlin is intensifying pressure on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to expand Belarusian involvement in the conflict. The Kremlin aims to divert Ukrainian military resources from the eastern front by encouraging drone attacks from Belarus into Ukraine.

The assessment suggests that Russia is leveraging financial support as leverage, threatening to withdraw assistance if Belarus does not comply. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to Belarus as a security and economic ally against perceived threats from Ukraine.

The ISM assessment also highlights Lukashenko’s efforts to balance Russian support for Belarus while safeguarding its sovereignty. Lukashenko has resisted allowing Belarusian Armed Forces to aid Russian operations in Ukraine or recruit Belarusians into the Russian military on a large scale. Despite Kremlin pressure, Lukashenko maintains a neutral stance towards Ukraine, refraining from adopting the Kremlin’s narrative of Ukraine as a threat to Belarus.
