Andy Burnham is set to reveal the reintroduction of the £2 bus fare cap, aiming to reduce daily travel expenses for numerous passengers. This initiative will see single fares limited to £2 outside London starting in January, as part of the Prime Minister’s efforts to alleviate the financial strain on citizens.
The government cautioned that without the cap, fares could reach over £10 on certain routes, emphasizing the importance of affordable transport for all individuals. Burnham stated that cheaper transportation should be accessible to everyone and announced the implementation of a £2 cap on bus fares across the country to facilitate easier commuting and alleviate the cost of living pressure.
Initially introduced by the Tories in 2023, the £2 cap was extended until March 2027, covering approximately 5,000 bus routes in England. With an additional £400 million in funding, the fare caps outside London are expected to benefit millions of commuters, especially those in rural and coastal areas where fares tend to be higher due to limited transport options.
John Healey, the newly appointed Chancellor, highlighted the government’s commitment to capping bus fares at £2 until 2027, reducing fares by a third for millions of individuals. The move is aimed at easing the financial burden on households without imposing additional costs on taxpayers.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the importance of making everyday journeys more affordable and convenient, stating that the fare reductions aim to support individuals with their cost of living, enhance accessibility, and promote connectivity to essential services and communities.
The government outlined that the funding for these initiatives will be sourced from changes within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero budget, redirecting funds from international climate change projects. Burnham’s recent actions also include the removal of VAT on electricity bills to provide financial relief to households and contribute to improving the overall cost of living situation.
