A family faced heartbreak after adopting a girl they thought was 12 years old, only to discover she was actually a 37-year-old woman involved in multiple similar cases. The couple had developed a strong emotional bond with the woman, who had deceived them by pretending to be a child and claiming to suffer from health issues related to childhood trauma.
The woman, identified as Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, reportedly targeted individuals by fabricating stories of abuse and seeking refuge and financial assistance. She used aliases, displayed childlike behavior, and simulated medical conditions like autism to gain sympathy and support from unsuspecting families and organizations.
A volunteer in Rio de Janeiro recounted how Amanda had reached out for help, alleging she had escaped from a traumatic past involving abuse and witchcraft rituals. Amanda’s elaborate deception included pretending to be an autistic teenager and exhibiting behaviors characteristic of a young child, such as drinking from baby bottles and using pacifiers.
Authorities revealed that Amanda had orchestrated similar schemes in various cities across Brazil, duping families, churches, and social workers into providing shelter and financial aid. Her elaborate facade was eventually uncovered when needles started emerging from her body, leading to the discovery of over 200 needles during medical examinations.
Following her arrest, Amanda confessed to posing as a child in multiple instances and faced legal repercussions for her false identities. Despite being convicted of identity fraud in Goias, she has yet to serve her sentence. Prosecutors have requested her detention pending a psychiatric evaluation to shed light on the complexities of the case.
A judge granted the request for Amanda to remain in custody at Joinville Women’s Prison for the evaluation, emphasizing the need to understand the circumstances surrounding her deceptive actions. This development marks a significant step in unraveling the elaborate web of deceit spun by Amanda across different regions in Brazil.
