An elderly teacher, David James Clarke, has been convicted of sexually assaulting over a dozen boys at a private school in East Sussex, where he worked between 1978 and 1989. Clarke, 82, committed numerous acts of child sexual abuse, primarily in a dark room used for photography development, during his tenure at Newlands Preparatory School.
Court proceedings revealed that Clarke would take children to the dark room as part of a club he managed, where he would isolate them and initiate inappropriate physical contact, eventually escalating to sexual abuse. His crimes came to light when authorities found indecent images on his computer, leading to the identification of 14 victims who bravely came forward.
Following a trial at Brighton Crown Court, Clarke was found guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault, gross indecency, and buggery, resulting in a 26-year prison sentence. The school closed in 2014, and Claire Brinton from the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the gravity of Clarke’s actions, urging other potential victims to speak out and seek justice.
Investigator Nicky Beard praised the victims for their courage in coming forward and assured that efforts would continue to bring justice to any additional victims of Clarke’s abuse. The impact of Clarke’s offenses may be long-lasting, but authorities are dedicated to supporting survivors and holding perpetrators like Clarke accountable for their actions.
