“Boy Suffers Severe Burns from Hazardous UK Plant”

Published on

A young boy experienced intense pain akin to being burned alive when exposed to one of the most hazardous plants in the UK, resulting in severe blisters on his chest.

Jesse May, while on a caravan vacation in Maidstone, Kent with his mother Kara May, engaged in outdoor play with a friend under the scorching weather. Shirtless, they utilized the plant as a make-believe weapon, unaware of the danger it posed.

Upon returning to their accommodation, Jesse complained of an odd sensation in his chest. Despite initial checks showing nothing, the following day revealed his chest covered in oozing blisters, prompting Kara to seek medical help.

An NHS worker informed Kara that the burns were caused by the toxic sap of a giant hogweed plant. The sap’s reaction with sunlight leads to severe skin burns, as detailed by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Two years post the incident in June 2024, Kara remains vigilant about the plant’s dangers after Jesse, now eight years old, sustained a significant scar on his chest. The incident left Jesse in excruciating pain, with pus-filled blisters causing discomfort and skin damage.

Kara emphasized the importance of recognizing giant hogweed, which can be mistaken for harmless plants like cow parsley. She advised prompt washing of any suspected contact areas to prevent burns, highlighting the potential long-term consequences of exposure.
