A piece of cake from the wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate is being put up for sale. This 15-year-old slice of fruit cake, measuring three inches by two inches, comes wrapped in paper and stored in a tin engraved with ‘William and Catherine, April 29, 2011’.

The cake portion was saved by Kate’s friend Juli Kavanagh, who also retained other wedding day memorabilia and two sweet cards from the future queen. One of the cards, dated 2017, was authored by Kate on behalf of her eldest son, Prince George, who was only four years old at the time.

In the note, George expressed gratitude for a large T-Rex toy gift, which he adored and placed outside his bedroom as a guardian. The card, signed by the young Prince, is among the royal keepsakes set to be auctioned by London-based Forum Auctions on May 28.

Rupert Powell, a specialist at Forum Auctions, highlighted the significance of items related to the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in modern royal history. These items continue to attract collectors due to their rarity, provenance, and connection to a momentous national event.

The wedding cake for William and Kate, designed by Fiona Cairns, was a grand 3ft tall, eight-tiered fruit cake adorned with sugar paste flowers, weighing an impressive 220lbs. The cake’s garlands were chosen to complement the decor of the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

Cairns revealed that Kate’s specific vision for a classical, imaginative, and stylish cake broke tradition, opting for a smaller design than previous royal wedding cakes. The task of creating the cake was described as stressful, and Cairns and her team had to keep the project a secret, even from their own families.

Interestingly, remnants of the cake were served seven years later at the 2018 christening of Prince Louis, showcasing the lasting legacy of this iconic dessert from the royal wedding.
