Police Chiefs Oppose World Cup Drinking Law Relaxation

Published on

Police chiefs express anger over the decision to relax drinking laws in the event of England advancing in the World Cup. They have called on the government not to grant a blanket exemption for bars and pubs to extend their operating hours during the games, but their requests were denied. Concerns are raised about potential disturbances in the UK surpassing those at the tournament. Chief Constable Mark Roberts emphasized their intention is not to dampen spirits.

Roberts, the National Police Chiefs Council Lead for football, highlighted the concern that granting a blanket exemption for pubs to stay open later if England progresses in the tournament could lead to increased challenges. He stressed the importance of adhering to regular licensing laws to maintain control. Despite their concerns, the Home Office has proceeded with the decision, prompting the police to adjust their plans and potentially extend officer shifts into the early hours, impacting local communities.

The police express a preference for a more controlled approach that benefits the licensed trade without burdening law enforcement. They worry about potential saturation of premises in residential areas, leading to alcohol-related issues and a strain on managing disorder. They stress the importance of following normal procedures on a case-by-case basis. The upcoming World Cup will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with England competing in various cities.
