A knee replacement surgery for a patient was halted at the last minute due to the unavailability of properly sterilized surgical equipment. Sally ‘Ann Pyrah ‘Barnes, 68, spent about 18 hours in the ward before being taken to the anaesthetic room. Just as the anaesthetist was about to administer a spinal injection, the surgeon intervened, revealing that the operation had to be cancelled because the equipment was not adequately sterilized.

This incident occurred at the St Woolos orthopaedic unit in Newport, South Wales, following previous instances of equipment mishaps within the health board. In a separate incident at the Royal Gwent Hospital, eight patients were sent home last month due to unsterilized surgical instruments. Moreover, in February, 21 patients underwent surgery with tools that were not properly sterilized, leading to delayed notification to patients about potential health risks.

Sally-Ann expressed her disappointment at the abrupt cancellation of her surgery on April 8, which was rescheduled for April 22. She eventually underwent both knee replacements in a single operation. While considering filing a formal complaint, she emphasized the need for improved quality control measures to prevent similar incidents from affecting other patients.

A petition has been initiated for an independent review of leadership and organizational culture at the health board. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board acknowledged the incident, stating that the surgery postponement was necessary to ensure patient safety. They addressed the issue promptly, ensuring the successful completion of the patient’s surgery after resolving the equipment problem.
