UK Heatwave Alert: Bank Holiday Weekend to Hit 33C

Published on

Temperatures are expected to soar to 33C during the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, with the Met Office forecasting an official heatwave and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issuing heat alerts.

The national weather agency predicts temperatures to reach 30C on Saturday, followed by 32C on Sunday and a scorching 33C on Monday, potentially breaking the record for the hottest ever May temperature of 32.8C.

The UKHSA has issued yellow heat health alerts for four regions – the Midlands, East of England, London, and South East – warning of potential minor impacts such as increased healthcare service usage by vulnerable individuals, higher risk to vulnerable lives, and indoor environments becoming very warm.

As Brits across the country gear up to enjoy the sunny weather this bank holiday weekend, it is crucial to stay safe, especially for those using public transport. The Met Office advises carrying water, staying hydrated, and disembarking if feeling unwell for some fresh air.

The guidance suggests dressing lightly in light-colored fabrics, using ice packs or cold compresses on pulse points, and carrying a handheld battery-operated fan for relief during heatwaves.

The UKHSA has issued heat health alerts for London, the South East, the East of England, and the Midlands, effective from 9 am today, highlighting potential minor impacts on health and social services due to the hot conditions.

Highs of 27C are anticipated in parts of the southeast and East Midlands today, with mostly sunny skies expected in England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland may experience cloudier conditions with occasional rain.

The Met Office records the highest May temperature at 32.8°C, with historical occurrences dating back to the early 20th century in various locations, mainly in southern and southeastern England.

As the UK prepares for the bank holiday heatwave, awareness of sun safety and heat-related health risks is paramount. The British Red Cross emphasizes precautions such as staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and taking breaks from the sun to prevent dehydration, sunburn, or heatstroke.

The Met Office projects temperatures to rise to 30C on Saturday, 32C on Sunday, and peak at 33C on Monday, potentially setting new temperature records for May. The agency attributes the warming trend to high-pressure systems over the UK.

The public is advised to stay updated on local weather conditions using resources like the Met Office app and to follow safety guidelines to cope with the expected heatwave, including keeping curtains closed to maintain indoor cooling.
