“Portobello: UK’s Hidden Gem for Sun, Shopping, and Seafood”

Published on

When a heatwave hits the UK, heading to the beach becomes a must-do activity. There are numerous stunning seaside locations to choose from, but if you’re looking for a blend of shopping, delicious food, and sunbathing, one destination stands out.

Situated close to a major city but exuding a unique ambiance, Portobello captured my heart during my visit last year. The town boasts a bustling main street filled with independent stores, mouthwatering chips, and convenient transport connections, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a less-traveled path.

A quick 15-minute bus ride from Edinburgh city center transports you to the heart of Portobello, revealing its special charm from the moment you arrive.

Upon reaching the seafront, we embarked on a leisurely stroll along the two-mile coastline, enjoying panoramic views of the Firth of Forth from the Victorian-era esplanade. The beach was alive with activity on that sunny Sunday morning, with families and playful dogs adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

The pristine cleanliness of Portobello beach immediately caught my attention, reflecting the locals’ deep pride in their community. In 2024, the town was honored as the UK’s second-best coastal town by JoJo Maman Bebe, with its beach also receiving a Keep Scotland Beautiful award.

After a rejuvenating walk by the shore, we explored the array of dining options lining the seafront, ranging from generous pizza slices at Civerino’s to brunch delights at The Beach House. Opting for Shrimp Wreck, a seafood spot famed for its fish finger sandwiches, I indulged in a scrumptious, messy meal that lived up to its reputation.

Venturing into the town’s high street, we discovered charming gems like The Portobello Bookshop, a cozy bookstore offering a diverse selection of literary treasures and hosting engaging events with authors.

Cove, a delightful gift shop brimming with unique trinkets, further enhanced our shopping experience in Portobello. Despite its modest size, the high street boasts a variety of eateries, pubs, and shops, ensuring a delightful and fulfilling visit.

While we missed out on exploring the swim center on this trip, its Victorian Turkish bath and fitness amenities promise an intriguing experience for our next visit.

For a weekend getaway, Portobello emerges as an ideal destination, whether the sun is shining or not. Its proximity to Edinburgh offers a perfect escape from the urban hustle, inviting visitors to unwind by the sea while savoring delectable treats and exploring charming shops.
