“Emergency Evacuation Underway for 40,000 over Chemical Tank Threat”

Published on

Authorities are in a rush to evacuate 40,000 individuals due to a significant storage tank leak of a dangerous chemical, posing a potential explosion threat. The tank, containing up to 26,500 liters of methyl methacrylate utilized in plastic parts production, overheated on Thursday, emitting vapors. Officials are working urgently to avert a possible explosion of the tank, housing the highly volatile substance, to prevent a severe industrial crisis.

Situated in Garden Grove, California, approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles, the plant faces the risk of a container failure or explosion, leading to extensive damage in the area. Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey expressed concerns on Friday, stating the uncertainty of the tank’s stability and the ongoing efforts to avert a disaster.

Residents in Garden Grove were forced to vacate their homes following evacuation orders. The evacuation zone was extended on Friday to encompass individuals in five neighboring cities in Orange County, California: Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.

Efforts to contain the leak at GKN Aerospace, a facility producing parts for commercial and military aircraft, were unsuccessful. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported by authorities.

Authorities provided an update on Friday, indicating successful maintenance of the tank’s temperature to allow time for repair strategies. The affected plant is in close proximity to downtown Los Angeles and Disneyland, which remained unaffected by evacuation orders.

A local resident named Danny Pham recounted being awoken by a roommate on Friday morning, urging immediate evacuation. Startled by the situation, Pham hastily left his residence with minimal belongings and sought refuge in a nearby city.

Fire crews have established containment measures with sandbags to prevent chemical spills into storm drains, creeks, or the nearby ocean. Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, warned of health risks if the chemical vaporizes, potentially causing respiratory issues and other symptoms.

Despite successfully neutralizing one damaged tank, authorities faced a critical situation with the remaining tank on Friday morning. Specialized hazardous material teams from GKN Aerospace are assessing the scenario.

Garden Grove Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein reassured residents, emphasizing that evacuation orders were issued for their safety amidst the ongoing crisis.
