Residents of Oldham, Greater Manchester, continue to express concerns about the safety of Vulcan Street, where Sharon McLean’s son was hit by a vehicle 26 years ago. Many residents believe that the road is prone to accidents, with reports of people suffering injuries like broken bones and being thrown significant distances.
Despite calls for traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and lower speed limits, residents feel that not enough has been done to enhance road safety. Sharon McLean, who experienced the trauma of her son’s accident, emphasizes the need for immediate action to prevent further tragedies on the road.
The long, straight nature of Vulcan Street, coupled with minimal traffic control measures, has instilled fear among the community. Concerns about speeding vehicles, especially during warm weather, have led residents to demand increased safety measures to protect pedestrians and children in the area.
Local politicians, including Labour councillor Josh Charters, have raised the issue with authorities, highlighting recent accidents and the urgent need for improvements on Vulcan Street. Charters has called for a meeting with the council’s highways team and police to discuss implementing traffic calming measures like speed cushions and road humps.
Acknowledging the concerns of residents, an Oldham Council spokesperson stated that road safety is a top priority. The council is collaborating with local authorities and law enforcement to evaluate safety issues on Vulcan Street and consider appropriate measures to enhance the well-being of residents and road users, especially with new housing developments in the vicinity.
