“US and Iran Nearing Agreement to End Conflict”

Published on

The United States and Iran are moving closer to finalizing a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict, as per information from two regional officials and a diplomat on Saturday. The US is considering potential new strikes against Iran while Iran has shown progress in discussions with the US following Pakistan’s army chief’s recent visit to Tehran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned advancements in the talks and hinted at potential developments later in the day.

Sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, expressed optimism that a decision on the document drafted by Pakistan could be made within the next 48 hours as both parties review it. Key figures such as US Vice President JD Vance and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, along with assistance from Qatar, have played important roles in bridging the remaining gaps.

US President Donald Trump remained quiet on social media, emphasizing the importance of reaching a resolution to prevent any resurgence of hostilities. US officials reiterated their stance that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, surrender enriched uranium, and keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson described the draft agreement as a “framework agreement” that addresses key issues to end the conflict, with ongoing discussions covering the Strait of Hormuz among other topics. The focus is on resolving the conflict before addressing nuclear matters.

Iranian officials highlighted progress in narrowing differences with the US, aiming to reach a final agreement within the coming days. Iran emphasized the importance of lifting sanctions as part of the agreement, reinforcing its commitment to allies like Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran’s parliament speaker warned of severe consequences if the US resumes attacks, underscoring Iran’s military readiness. The conflict between the US and Iran was triggered by strikes in February, leading to economic disruptions, including the blockade of Iranian ports by the US. Pakistan continues to mediate for direct negotiations between the two nations.

Efforts are ongoing to broker a ceasefire and prevent further escalation, with key figures from both sides engaging in discussions. The situation remains fluid as negotiations progress towards a potential resolution.
