Government Ignored Risks: Nuclear Test Veterans’ Offspring Suffer

Published on

Government scientists were aware that British troops participating in nuclear bomb tests could have offspring with deformities but chose not to inform them. They believed the risk was not significant since only thousands, not millions, were involved, and the impact on humanity overall was deemed minimal.

One soldier affected was Michael Watson, who was stationed at Maralinga, Australia, and Christmas Island for nuclear testing. His family has faced numerous health challenges, including miscarriages, autism, infertility, and birth defects.

Decades later, descendants of these veterans continue to experience high rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and child deaths, with the government dismissing requests for investigations into these issues. Recent studies have confirmed genetic defects passed from radiation-exposed fathers to their children.

Documents authored by Professor John Butterfield revealed the long-known risks of radiation exposure on genetic mutations. Despite acknowledging the increased likelihood of birth defects, authorities have denied compensation claims from affected families, citing insufficient evidence.

Advocates are now urging the Prime Minister to review the evidence and conduct thorough research on the health impacts of nuclear testing. The Ministry of Defence maintains that there is no conclusive proof of elevated genetic mutations or health issues among nuclear test veterans’ offspring.

Butterfield’s research during the tests led to advancements in diabetes treatments, and he was later honored with a life peerage. The push for further investigations into the health consequences of nuclear testing continues amidst ongoing government skepticism and reluctance to acknowledge the full extent of the issue.
