A man was shot by police officers in Whitefield after he attempted to flee by driving at them, leading to a dramatic confrontation. Detectives later found drugs and a gun in connection with the incident.
The Greater Manchester Police reported that officers tried to stop a vehicle on Bury New Road at approximately 3 pm on Friday. However, the driver refused to stop and deliberately drove towards the officers in an attempt to escape. A firearms officer fired a shot, injuring the 20-year-old man in the arm.
The man was hospitalized with injuries that were deemed not life-threatening or life-altering, although the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) later revealed he may have a broken elbow.
Subsequently, detectives discovered drugs and a firearm, leading to the arrest of the man on suspicion of involvement in the distribution of Class A drugs. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the police conducting searches at an address in Radcliffe where they found a firearm and a significant amount of Class A and Class B drugs. No additional arrests have been made.
Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop of GMP’s Serious Crime Division commended the officers for their response to the dangerous situation. He emphasized the importance of swiftly addressing such incidents to prevent dangerous weapons and drugs from circulating in the community.
The IOPC confirmed their independent investigation into the police shooting incident in Bury. They highlighted the importance of impartial scrutiny to fully comprehend the events and have started gathering evidence through post-incident procedures and scene examinations.
