Topshop is set to make a comeback on Oxford Street after a five-year hiatus from its flagship store. The renowned fashion retailer closed its Oxford Street location in January 2021 following the collapse of its parent company, Arcadia Group, in November 2020.
After being acquired by ASOS along with Miss Selfridge for a total of £330 million, it was noted that the deal did not encompass the physical stores. However, recent reports indicate that Topshop is gearing up to launch its first standalone store on Oxford Street within the next year, as revealed by Drapers.
While Topshop made a return to Oxford Street last year through a launch at Liberty department store, this upcoming opening will mark its first independent store in the esteemed London shopping district. Additionally, the brand is now accessible in all 32 department stores of John Lewis, with Topman products also available in seven stores and online at John Lewis.
Michelle Wilson, the managing director of Topshop, expressed that customers have shown eagerness for the brand’s reentry into physical stores. Once boasting 300 stores across the UK, Topshop saw a significant shift when ASOS sold a majority stake to Heartland, a move that led to the relaunch of Topshop.com and Topman.com websites.
Looking ahead, Wilson indicated ongoing efforts towards expanding physical store presence. In a similar vein, Russell & Bromley recently reopened its Richmond store post-administration rescue, with Next acquiring the luxury shoe chain for £2.5 million, along with intellectual property and a portion of existing stock. This acquisition resulted in the closure of 33 out of its 36 branches, while the brand, founded in 1880, continues to be managed by Andrew Bromley.
Next’s strategic acquisitions in recent years have included notable brands such as Cath Kidston, Joules, Seraphine, and Made.com.
